Making the Tail Concrete with Counterfactual Analysis

Jon Laux, Head of Analytics, CyberCube, and Simon Heather, Senior Catastrophe Modeller, Gallagher Re. Few cyber attacks so far have “made landfall” from an insurance claims perspective. Nonetheless, some of the past “near misses” could have been worse – perhaps much worse – than what we have witnessed. In this session, counterfactual analysis has been used to reexamine several well-known cyber attacks, considering what actually happened but also what could have happened. This approach allows a better understanding of large systemic loss potential in a more concrete way, as “degrees of separation” from actual events we know and understand.
